Using Essential Oils to Anoint for Healing
Oct 14th, 2008 by lindasmith
If the Early Christian Church thought that anointing was important to the act of healing—can we not recover this in our healing ministries today? According to the Scriptures, they prayed, touched and anointed with healing oils, all who were sick in body and mind—and they were healed. We aren’t sure exactly which oils they were using—but we do know they weren’t using their cooking oils—in other words—they were not using just olive oil!
We then need to know what was available in first century Palestine. This we know from history—frankincense, myrrh, balsam and cedarwood were plentiful. Other oils that may have been available include hyssop, Rose of Sharon (cistus), pine, spikenard, cinnamon, cassia, sandalwood (aloes), galbanum and cypress.
When anyone was sick, they prayed, laid on hands and anointed with healing oil all who were sick in body and mind—and they were healed. Healing Touch Spiritual Ministry starts with the Laying-On of Hands and has the goal of helping churches reclaim healing as the work of the church. When we combine this with prayer and with anointing we put the person is the best light for healing to occur whether it is physical, mental, emotional or spiritual healing.

After I took courses rom The Institute of Spiritual Healing & Aromatherapy (ISHA) my father was diagnosed with brain cancer and he passed away this year on Father’s Day.
During the last days we had with him in hospice, I used several oils, healing touch energy work and Laying-On of Hands with him to prepare him for his journey. I anointed him each day with the oils, played music, read and talked with him. I even danced with him although he was lying in his bed. The oils helped him and me to meet our physical, mental, spiritual and emotional needs during that time.
It was a comfort to me to be able to help my father with his healing as he was entering the next part of his journey. I was proud to be able to offer my father this gift during that difficult time and I was glad to have learned the knowledge from ISHA to share with him.
