Managing Menopause with Essential Oils
May 22nd, 2009 by lindasmith
Menopause literally means “last period.” it usually occurs somewhere between the ages of 45 to 52 with the cessation of egg production. With this comes changes in hormone levels of estrogen and progesterone. Keeping a balance becomes increasingly difficult. Menopausal symptoms may include hot and cold flushes, heavier or lighter bleeding, night sweats, excessive hair growth, mood swings, aches in the joints, weeping, anxiety, irrational fears, chronic fatigue, PMS, depression, digestive disturbances, sleeping problems, cravings for sweets and carbohydrates, weight gain, fuzzy thinking, palpitations, vaginal dryness and dry skin.
How Can Essential Oils Help?
Clary sage is probably the most well known essential oil for treating hormone imbalances. It contains a diterpene alcohol called sclareol making it estrogen-like in its effect on the body. It has a euphoric effect so you definitely don’t want to be taking this oil internally and drink alcohol. Clary sage is considered a good uterine tonic, helps with painful periods, hot flashes, post-natal depression, panic attacks, impotence, and frigidity. it can get rid of monthly bloat, can regulate menses, can balance the endocrine system including the pituitary and the pancreas making it also helpful for diabetics.
Geranium is a companion oil for clary sage and has a very pleasing fragrance. The effect on the reproductive system will be more subtle than the clary sage. It is used primarily for breast engorgement, vaginal thrush, painful periods, PMS, and uterine hemorrhage. It has a calming, uplifting and strengthening effect. Some find this to be a great oil for hot flashes and vaginal dryness.
There are other helpful oils for menopausal symptoms like fennel, sage and yarrow. Fennel is estrogen-like because it contains phyto-estrogens. Sage is estrogen-like and when used externally has a very strong estrogenic properties that can be helpful for hot flashes, water retention, and prevention of wrinkles. Yarrow is good for menstrual problems like PMS, fibroids, and varicose veins. It is hormone-like as well.
