Essential Oils Can Improve Mental Acuity and Concentration

Today Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other debilitating brain disorders are robbing our elders of the best season of their lives. The pharmaceutical industry wants you to believe that drugs (chemicals) are the answer yet each drug they develop has a long list of side effects that in turn may cause a worsening of the problem. Can anything from nature help? YES! Essential oils high in sesquiterpenes such as vetiver, cedarwood, patchouli, German chamomile, myrrh, melissa, and sandalwood are known to cross the blood-brain barrier.
The fragrance of many essential oils can powerfully affect the limbic system located in the central region of the brain. This is where memory, emotions and sexual arousal are located as well as the center that governs aggressive behavior. Other oils like pepper, grapefruit and fennel oils have been found to stimulate brain activity. Peppermint has also been helpful in protecting against stresses and toxins in brain cells.
Young Living has a great blend called Brain Power which has frankincense, sandalwood, melissa, cedarwood, blue cypress, lavender, and helichrysum in it. This blend helps to promote deep concentration and increases mental potential and clarity. The sesquiterpene compounds in these oils increase activity in the pineal, pituitary and hypothalamus in the brain. Younger people who use this oil say that it helps to clear away “brain fog” due to exposure to synthetic petrochemicals in food, skin and hair care products.
