The holidays can be stressful and for many, can be a blue time especially if they are missing loved ones or can’t be with family and friends for the holidays. Can essential oils help fill your days with joy? Most definitely. Let’s take a look at several oils known to raise our spirits and help us cope with life’s pressures.
Rose (Rosa damascena) is a beautiful oil that creates a sense of balance, harmony and well-being. it is elevating especially for the mind and brings joy to the heart.
Citrus oils especially that of Bergamot (citrus begamia) and Orange (Cistrus sinesis) are two oils that balance, calms emotions and relieve anxiety, stress and tension. Both of these oils are great diffused throughout the house. Lemon (Citrus limon) also promotes a deep sense of well-being and helps to boost immunity and reduce depression.
Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) increases relaxation, balances male and female energies and restores confidence and equilibrium which is a great help when there is the added stresses of the holidays.
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) helps release negative memories so that joy can be attained.
Jasmine (Jasminum officinale) is one of those exotic fragrances that helps to revitalize one’s spirit. It brings feelings of love, support and joy and is used to combat sorrow, depression, and nervous exhaustion.
Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) contain sesquiterpenes which stimulate the limbic system of the brain and the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands. This is a beautiful scent of the season that increases spiritual awareness, promotes meditation, improves attitude and uplifts one’s spirit.
How to Use Any of These Oils
All of these oils are safe to use directly on the body if you are using true therapeutic grade oils. Only Jasmine which is an absolute should not be taken internally. Rose has the highest frequency of any of the oils and is very expensive. Geranium is known as the “poor man’s rose” because of its rosey fragrance. the citrus oils are very refreshing and inexpensive. However, they are phototoxic so it is best if applying these oils to the skin, to do so where the “sun doesn’t shine.” Frankincense is by far my favorite of all of the above listed oils. Having grown up in a church that used frankincense incense, it is a comforting famialiar fragrance that lifts me up.
