We have lots of carrier oils to choose from when selecting one for a massage or for diluting an oil to take internally. There is a wide variety plus some other infused or macerated oils such as Calendula and St. Johns Wort. The variety of vegetable oils available to a newcomer can seem a little bewidering at first but choosing which one is for you is not really complicated.

You choose one with the properties that you need for your particular needs. You want to use vegetable oils that are the very best for intensive facial treatments and body massage and that can be combined to suit your particular requirements. Experimenting with small quantities will help you find what works best for you.

Here Are Some Suggestions

Sweet almond, peach and apricot oils are very versatile and can be used for both body massage and facial treatments since they are light and easily absorbed. If you have a nut allergy, then sunflower or grapeseed oil might be better.

Jojoba is by far my favorite but it is not a real oil–rather it is a thick pale yellow liquid extracted from the beanlike seeds of a desert shrub. Jojoba is a wax that is the closest preparation to our own naturally secreted skin oil and is the most moisturizing of the carrier oils and good for most skin types.

My second most favorite carrier oil is fractionated coconut oil which is a clear liquid squeezed from coconuts by high pressure. It is a favorite of a lot of massage therapists. I like it because of the nice feeling on my skin.

Unrefined avocado and wheatgerm oil are perfect for nourishing the skin in an overnight treatment, but are a little too heavy for use in a body massage. They have a strong odor that some people do not like, but please don’t let that put you off! They are excellent, deep nourishing oils that will provide essential fatty acids and nutrients to soften your skin.

What About Prepared Massage Oils–What’s Really Good to Use?

My most favorite is Cel-Lite Magic Massage oil prepared by Young Living Essential Oils. It comes in a great pump bottle making it very easy to use. This oil combines fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil, wheatgerm oil, sweet almond oil, and olive oil and the the following essential oils: grapefruit, cypress, cedarwood, juniper and clary sage. The grapefruit essential oil benefits skin textures and juniper essential oil helps detoxify and cheanse the skin. I absolutely love the fragrance and how this oil feels on my skin.

The whole purpose of carrier oils is of course “to carry” or act as a vehicle for administering essential oils to the skin or to take them internally. Some essential oils are simply too “hot” for the skin and should be safely diluted to prevent redness and burning. Or if an essential oil is used in a massage, it is very helpful to first dilute it so that the whole body can receive the benefits of the essential oil. Otherwise, you will use too much essential oil which is simply not necessary and may not be safe.

If taking an essential oil internally is desired, it is also helpful to put a drop of a carrier oil in the vegetable capsule first or the essential oil may dissolve it before you can swollow it!

Some Dilution Tips

If you are desiring to make a massage oil to deliver an essential oil, you can make a 1%, 2% or at most a 5% dilution. The dilution will of course depend on what essential oil you are choosing to use in a massage. The hotter oils such as basil (a good anti-spasmodic oil) can be used in a 1 or 2% dilution whereas frankincense which is not a hot oil could be used in a 5% dilution. To make a 1% dilution, use 1 drop of essential oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil. But for a massage, a teaspoon won’t go very far. You could then make up a larger quantity by adding 20 drops of your chosen oil to 100 ml of a carrier oil.

To make a 5% dilution you could add 5 drops of your essential oil to one teaspoon of carrier oil and for a larger quantity like 30 ml, you could add 30 drops of your essential oil.

PS: Want to learn more about safe use of essential oils? Go to http://www.ISHAaromatherapy.com to find an aromatherapy educational course near you.

I am attending the American Holistic Nurses Association’s annual conference, an organization that I have been a member of for the past 21 years. Through the years I have seen a gradual opening to researching and embracing new forms of holistic health care in the nursing field. Nurses are advocates for patient care and in a holistic nursing approach–for health care that addresses the whole person–body/mind/spirit. Essential oils in the form of aromatherapy education is a perfect match for holistic nurses interested in non-pharmcological approaches. Why? Nurses more than any other professional on the health care team see the results of drugs and surgery and how often they cause multiple side effects and complications. Can nature in the form of essential oils hold out a better approach? Many believe this to be true.

How Can Essential Oils Broaden a Holistic Nursing Practice?

Infections–many essential oils are known to be most effective (95% in the research) for infections of all kinds including MRSA. The pharmaceutical companies probably do not want the public to known this statistic.

Rest and relaxation–many essential oils have chemical properties that aid in sleep and decrease in stress related symptoms. Just look at the chemistry of lavender, Roman Chamomile, Valerian, and blends like Peace and Calming, Harmony, and RutaVaLa.

Pain Relief–a major problem in hospitals is pain associated either with disease processes or with the interventions of medical care. Drugs are often prescribed which can cause more harm than good. Essential oils may not work as “fast” as pharmacologic drugs but they will work. For muscle and bone pain, look at the action of marjoram, lavender, wintergreen, peppermint, cypress, Idaho tansy, Mt. savory, or blends like Aroma Siez, Deep Relief, and Valor.

Wound Healing–many essential oils have been found to be healing to skin, even for deep wounds. Look at Spikenard, helichrysum, rose, frankincense, myrrh, styrax benzoin, galbanum, Roman and German Chamomiles, Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and Rosaline (Melaleuca ericifolia), and blends like Melrose, Thieves, and Purification.

Sinus Congestion and pain–many times people cannot sleep well because their sinuses are plugged or the drugs they have taken have caused inflammation and congestion. Essential oils like peppermint, Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus radiata can help. Also look at basil known to clean off the receptor sites on the nasal mucosal cells, and blends like Purification, Raven and R.C.

These are but a few ways that nurses in clinical settings can aid the well being of others.

PS: Want to know more about the healing properties of essential oils? Go to our website to find out if aromatherapy education is right for you. http://www.ISHAhealing.com

Headaches are a common symptom of fibromyalgia. In fact, more than 50% of people whith fibromyalgia suffer from constant headaches or migraines. There are a number of interesting theories as to why people with fibromyalgia suffer from so many headaches. Many of these theories rest on the the idea that the same dysfunction that causes fibromyalgia also causes migraine headaches.

Some Causes Incude:

Sleep Disorders

TMJ disorder

Low levels of serotonin

Low levels of magnesium

Headaches can make fibromyalgia pain much more intesnse. They tend to increase fatigue, making pain much more difficult to tolerate. 36% of fibromyalgia sufferers with chronic migraines experience greater levels of depression and pain in their illness.

How Can Essential Oils Relieve Headaches Associated with Fibromyalgia?

You can use lavender, marjoram, petitgrain, Roman and German Chamomile, clary sage, lemongrass, helichrysum, peppermint, ginger and black pepper. Also try other anti-inflammatory oils like nutmeg, balsam fir, white fir, and wintergreen. There are a number of blends I have found helpful for those with fibromyalgia headaches: PanAway, Relieve It, ImmuPower and Ortho Ease massage oil. You can boost the power of these oil blends by layering peppermint on top.

Fibromyalgia is indeed a debilitating disease brought on by a toxic liver. Cleaning up the body is the first step by to health and many supplements that have essential oils in them can help.

How to Uses the Oils:

You can diffuse them, rub them neat on the neck, temples, forehead, you can dilute them for a body massage, use them in a soothing bath. Some of these oils can be taken internally but I would adivse first learning more about the individual oil, its chemistry and its healing properties.

PS: Want to know more about treating the body with essential oils for health and wellness? Go to http://www.ISHAhealing.com to learn about our educational offerings throughout the United States. We offer classes in aromatherapy that lead to a national certification.

Complementary medicine actually holds more promise for fibromyalgia sufferers than traditional allopathic medicine. This is a disease that affects body/mind/spirit and needs to be treated as such. The benefits of complementary medicine is actually the fact that it does not include pharamaceutical interventioins or surgery which both have serious side effects and do nothing for this problem. Energy medicine which can include many modalities and aromatherapy can decrease and even eliminate most symptoms.

What are some symptoms of fibromyalgia?

Widespread pain, dizziness, morning stiffness, sleep disorders, TMJ problems, skin complaints, depression, myofascial pain, weather changes, chronic headaches, multiple chemical sensitivities, chest symptoms, dysmenorrhea, muscle twitches and weakness, fatigue, urinary and pelvic problems, cold symptoms, “fibrofog,” vision problems, weight gain and anxiety.

What Causes Fibromyalgia?

We now know that one of the main causes of fibromyalgia is an acid condition in the body. Besides doing a gut and liver cleanse, you can help your body by alkalinizing your system. Lemon essential oil can help. Try putting a few drops of lemon oil in your water and drinking only lemon water. Next, look at your symptoms and use essential oils for each symptom.

For pain Relief: lavender, marjoram, petitgrain, Roman and German chamomile, clary sage, lemongrass, helichrysum, peppermint, ginger and black pepper. Lavender with peppermint and helichrysum creates an anti-inflammatory synergy. Other anti-inflammatory oils include nutmeg, balsam fir, white fir, and wintergreen.

For Stress/Anxiety Relief: Rose, frankincense, clary sage, sweet orange, bergamot, grapefruit, ylang ylang, sandalwood, neroli, marjoram, petitgrain, mandarin, lavender, geranium, tangerine, jasmine.

For Peaceful Sleep: Lavender, neroli, jasmine, marjoram, Roman chamomile.

For a Feeling of Harmony and Safety: Frankincense, lavender, rose, mandarin, neroli, helichrysum.

For Headaches: Lavender, peppermint, marjoram, basil, Roman chamomile.

For Increased Circulation: Rosemary, ginger, black pepper, peppermint, lemongrass, geranium.

We know that many of our cosmetics are not good for us since they contain many petrochemicals, so how can essential oils help us to have a really good complexion? First step is is to throw away your cosmetics–unless they are completely natural. Many essential oils are actually very good for the skin but need to be diluted for the best effect. Which oils should we use? for the epidermis, look at the top of a plant–the flower or the fruit. Oils good for skin care include orange, bergamot, jasmine, neroli and lavender. These oils seem to be more effective for acute conditions or those concerns that have recently appeared.

What about the middle layer of the skin–the dermis. This layer responds well to essential oils extracted from the leaves and foliage of a plant. Examples include geranium, rosemary and tea tree. These oils are good for reducing inflammation, balancing and maintaining skin healing.

Now for the deeper structures in skin we would look at oils that are extracted from the roots, resins and woods. Some suggestions include sandalwood, cedarwood, frankincense and myrrh. These essential oils provide stability and strength to the subcutaneous layer. Often chronic conditions respond well to these oils and can strengthen the skin from deeper layers. These are some of the oils suggested for mature skin or damaged skin.

PS: Want to learn more about how you can use essential oils to heal your body? The Institute of Spiritual Healing and Aromatherapy is offering a Virual Aromatherapy Circle (club) that addresses many health issues and how essential oils can bring us into balance and restore health. Become a member and receive weekly teleseminars and periodic ebooks on interesting topics of concern.

Copal or Copaiba is an amazing essential oil that comes from the jungles of Brazil. It is from the plant Copaifera reticulata. Copal is the only essential oil which is not steam distilled – it’s tapped sustainably from the heartwood of the tree, so it’s still “living” when it is extracted! It’s never been sold in the USA until now. Copal has similar properties to helichrysum, melissa, and neroli oils. It is one of the most powerful essential oils studied for inflammation – twice as strong as wintergreen, yet is gentle on the skin. In a peer review paper in France, Copal was listed as the second most powerful oil against inflammation (second only to Myrrh resin).

There are many varieties of Copal, however there is only one variety which is powerful – that’s the one comprising 60% of the anti-inflammatory sesquiterpene called “beta caryophyllene.” Other varieties of Copal only have 9% beta caryophyllene, so they don’t have the same anti-inflammatory action. There is only one other essential oil which has anywhere near 60% beta caryophyllene, and that’s Clove oil…but because of clove oil’s numbing properties, it’s not always appropriate to use. Copal is therefore more versatile.

Yes, you read correctly–the three oils given by the Magi as gifts fitting for the Christ child were frankincense, myrrh and liquid gold, better known as balsam fir. Research shows that these three essential oils were found in King Tutankhamen’s grave when it was opened in 1922. So in ancient times, these were considered oils fit for the king and were considered of royal nature. They were so important that they were the only oils placed in the King’s tomb. What does this have to do with cancer?

Look at the chemistry and then look at the vibrational frequencies of these oils. Frankincense and balsam fir are both very high in monoterpenes whereas myrrh is very high in sesquiterpenes. You will find that they are all highly anti-inflammatory and anti-tumoral. They are all immune stimulating, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal oils. Check out the research and you will find numerous studies showing anti-carcinogenic and anti-tumor activities with one or more of these kingly oils. Most recently a study made news showing that boswellia carteri (frankincense) kills bladder cancer cells without affecting non-cancerous cells.

Now I understand why these were the gifts given to the “new king.” They are the best of what nature has to offer. These three oils can keep us healthy and are a sign of “wealth.” This was not only an acknowledgement of Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah, but was meant to help him stay healthy for his task here on earth.

We all have cancer cells at one time or another in our life. When our immune systems are lowered, cancer cells have an opportunity to multiply forming tumors. When cancers develop, it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies that could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors. Cancers will feed on sugar and thrive in an acid environment. Changing one’s diet, reducing stress, recognizing the connection between mind, body and spirit, exercising daily and deep breathing to get more oxygen down to the cellular level and using the three kingly oils will go far in helping a person with cancer to return to a healthy body/mind/spirit.

PS Want to learn how to get the three “Kingly oils?” Go to http://www.youngliving.com/HTSMSmith to order yours today. Don’t go the health food store–you will only get perfume grade oils. You need therapeutic grade oils and I work with only the best.

Recently I have been putting together our application to renew our status as an approved school of aromatherapy. That has required me to go through our curriculum piece by piece and examine how we present information about nature’s medicines–the essential oils. Whether I am looking at the history of aromatics or the chemistry of oils, I am impressed with both the science and the art of aromatherapy and how far it has come in the United States in such a short time. Why study essential oils? Here are three good reasons.

Number 1: Essential oils are nature’s medicines and can aid us in healing our body, mind and spirit. What oil helps arthritis and painful joints? What can I use for skin infections? Can an oil help get rid of a sore throat, earache, bronchitis, the cold or flu? What do I use for improving mental functioning and clarity of thought? Can essential oils help me balance my hormones, menopausal symptoms or aid in relieving menstrual pain? What about pregnancy–are esssential oils safe to use? Learning about essential oils can aid us in relieving common discomforts and promoting healing–if we know what we are doing.

Number 2: Learning about the chemistry of essential oils will help us to know how nature works in our favor. Essential oils are made up of hundreds and sometimes thousands of different chemical compounds–how do they work? Are they safer than drugs? Do they have side effects that I need to know about? How much do I use? Can I overdose or use too much? Learning about the structure of essential oils will better equip us in knowing how much and how often we should use nature’s medicines.

Number 3: Becoming a certified aromatherapist will add another dimension to the healing work you may already being doing. Are you a nurse? massage therapist? energy healer? physician? therapist? Americans know that pharmaceutical drugs are dangerous and cause major side effects. Nature’s medicines are far safer but need to be recommended by knowledgeable people who know their actions, uses and safety factors. Becoming a certified aromatherapist will give you the science as well as the art of applying and using essential oils.

PS: To find out how you too can become a certified clinical aromatherapist, go to http://www.ISHAhealing.com to find out more about our 240 hour course of study leading to a certification as a clinical aromatherapist.

Yes I know, after the holidays lots of people have picked up a few unnecessary pounds and when their clothes get tight–it’s time to think about the gym or walking or exercising. Let’s face it–”diet” will always be a four-lettered word that is most distasteful. What if I told you how to create your own weight loss program that involves pleasant taste? Essential oils can do that. I’m not going to say there isn’t exercise involved–everyone needs to move their body even if you use a walker or a wheel chair. The secret though is decreasing the amount of food, particularly calories that come from junk food. Some diets say you can eat whatever you like just not as much as you like. Our bodies quickly feel “deprived” when we start to cut back so how can taste provided by essential oils help us eat less?

Peppermint is a great example. By placing just a trace of peppermint essential oil on your tongue, it actually helps to curb your appetite and you eat less. As a child, my emotional memory is one of delight at getting some peppermint candy at Christmas. That seems to be the only time it was available so tasting anything with peppermint in it brings back pleasant memories for me.

Other oils like lemon, orange or grapefruit in your water will help you have a feeling of fullness and satisfaction. My favorite oil is to use tangerine or mandarin in my water. It is such a pleasant taste–you will thank me for that suggestion once you’ve tried it.

Here’s a suggestion–place a few drops of your favorite tasting essential oil in your bottle of water and take a walk! Enjoy the sunshine even in the winter months. Today it is Sunny and in the 70’s here in Denver and it’s January! So take advantage of those warm days when they come and when it is snowy and dismally cold outside–then go to the gym or put on a DVD and exercise! Get your bones and muscles moving and if you overdo it, the essential oils can help! Use basil, marjoram, wintergreen or birch oils to massage those tight sore muscles.

PS: Want to know more about losing weight and exercising with essential oils? Then learn this and much more in our aromatherapy courses. Go to http://www.ISHAhealing.com and check out our schedule of classes.
