Can an Essential Oil Really Be a “Gift to the Female?”

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) has a very complex chemistry like many other essential oils. Only clary sage’s chemistry has as molecule that makes it ”hormone-like” meaning it can certainly help peri and menopausal symptoms. It is probably the most well known essential oil for treating hormone imbalances. In fact it has a “euphoric” effect. Perhaps that’s why the German beer makers used to throw clary sage in with their hops when they brewed their beer. It’s also “loco” weed and that’s why ranchers don’t want their cows to get into clary sage!
The compound that makes all the difference is a diterpene alcohol called sclareol which give it the estrogen-like effect on the body. It’s considered a good uterine tonic, helps with amenorrhea, hot flashes, post-natal depression, panic attacks, impotence, and frigidity. It can get rid of monthly bloat, regulate the menses, and balance the endocrine system including the pituitary and pancreas making it helpful with diabetes.
How Should You Use This Oil?
I would start by using it topically on the soles of the feet–a few drops twice a day. If that does not control the symptoms, just remember that clary sage has a wide safety factor–you could apply it over the ovaries or rub it on the belly. If that works there is no need to take this oil internally. But if it does not control your peri and menopausal symptoms, then consider putting a few drops in a vegetable capsule and taking it internally once or twice a day. Always start conservatively then gradually increase the number of drops just until your symptoms disappear. Avoid using clary sage during pregnancy and in certain hormone-related cancers because of its hormone-like properties.
